artist's statement videos soundscapes guest book artist

Aur(e)ality is an interactive sound art installation by Lori Beckstead that was exhibited at Ryerson University in Toronto in October 2005, and again as part of the Sign Waves festival of sound art in 2006.

Aur(e)ality brings disparate soundscapes together into one physical location, touching on themes of location/dislocation and nature/culture. Listeners control their own listening experience by moving through a dark, empty space wearing wireless headphones; the soundscape changes according to the physical location of the listener.

The soundscapes were recorded binaurally in various locations in Australia.

For more information, read the artist's statement, watch a video of people moving through the installation while hearing what they heard, or read what visitors had to say about the experience.

The soundscapes from Aur(e)ality and others are available as part of a collection called Winanga-li: Australian Soundscapes, availabe for free download from Wandering Ear.
